Paul McCartney wrote the song while cruising the Caribbean aboard a yacht called Happy Days. It is based on his relationship with his then-girlfriend, Jane Asher. Because of their occupations, they could not spend much time together.
When they were apart, he could remember the things they had said to each other the last time they were together.
